Planes, Trains, and Santa at the Military Aviation Museum

The MAM, in association with the Tidewater Division of the National Model Railroad Association, is pleased to announce its 8th-annual model train show! Layouts on display are provided by the following clubs and organizations: Tidewater O Gauge Association, South Hampton Roads N-Trak Club, Tidewater S Gauge Association, Tidewater Modular Railroad Club, Tidewater Live Steamers, and others. Santa Claus will fly in each day, with a meet-and-greet for children of all ages at 11:00am! Many other visitors will be on hand each day. Watch for further details. As one of the early champions of the cause of new music including pieces composed and popularized by women, JoAnn leads the Orchestra in a performance which will both entertain and inspire.

On Thursday, October 19 from 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the USO, the art of networking, and speed network with other military spouses, hiring employers, organizations, and community leaders. All participants will walk away meeting new friends, contacts, and professionals. All military spouses will receive a Military Spouse Networking Kit at the end of the event.

National Chess Day Festival

Join us for a celebration of the Game of Kings!  The City of Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads Chess Association present the 4th Annual Virginia Beach National Chess Day, Saturday, October 7th, from 8 AM to 6 PM, at the Fountain Plaza in Town Center.  Free Chess Lessons will be offered throughout the day for those who wish to learn how to play.  National Masters will be on hand for a take-all-comers Blitz challenge throughout the day.  Players can enjoy a game of chess on our giant chess set or explore chess variations such as four-way chess, Plunder chess, the all new Equalizer Dice chess, or a game of Bughouse.  Play casual chess with new and old friends, play in a tournament with sections for players of all ages and abilities (trophies / medals for everyone!), or match your skill against 5-time State Champion National Master Dan Miller in a simultaneous exhibition.

The Virginia Apprenticeship Council Meeting will hold its public meeting at the Norfolk Scope Arena at 10:00 a.m. prior to the Scope Your Future: Registered Apprenticeship Job Expo.

Enjoy an unconventional presentation by Tony “Coyote” Perez as he reads excerpts from his upcoming book, Coyote Nose: Tales of the Early Desert Carnies of Burning Man. Perez has been involved with Burning Man since 1996 and founded the Department of Public Works of Black Rock City in 1998. Perez and his team are responsible for building Black Rock City; the temporary city of Burning Man, and is known as the “Bard of the Desert.”

The presentation is included with Burning Man Night admission but reservations are REQUIRED due to limited seating. Please email mball@thehermitagemuseum.org by Tuesday, June 13 (or while space remains available) to reserve your spot.
