With COMPTUEX fast-approaching, here are some quick tips to keep in mind as you and your Sailor prepare for the upcoming deployment (adapted from the Ask the Spouses post):
-Don't skimp on the basics. Your Sailor will be working frequently in 100+ degree heat, if they want to buy new undergarments, socks, sheets, etc. It's worth the investment. Items to consider: personal fan, mattress cover, breathable sheets, multiple pairs of shower shoes, a sea-to-land phone card (purchasable at the NEX), black-out curtains for their racks, Dr. Scholl's boot inserts, Foot-care products (fungicides, bacterial sprays, etc.), deodorant, first aid kit, small sewing kit, an external hard drive with saved movies/television shows/family photos
-Be honest with each other. Deployments aren't easy, but neither of you have to go through them alone. Talk through your concerns and worries and make a plan together.
-Utilize all the resources that you have available to make your deployment easier. Contact your OMBUDS to learn more.
-SINGLE SAILORS: Need to find a temporary home for your pet? Make a profile on Dogs on Deployment to search for a family willing to take in your pet for the duration of your deployment. You will still be responsible for all of the bills, but at least your pet will have a temporary and loving home.
-Want A Family Portrait Before Deployment? Schedule a photo shoot with Hearts Apart
-Have Small Children Who Haven't Gone Through a Deployment? Military OneSource has a short video narrated by the cast of Sesame Street to help explain to your children what they can expect.
In addition, Daddy Dolls are also available for purchase through their website.
United Through Reading is another excellent program that allows your Sailor to record themselves reading a story book that your children can watch and follow-along with at home.
As always, if you have any questions or wanted to add to the list, please feel free to email your OMBUDS directly or comment below.
Deployment is stressful, but you're not alone. You and your Sailor have the full support of the Blacklions family; and together, we can help each other transition smoothly into the upcoming deployment.
